Industrial-style running boards built for real-world abuse. Gen-Ys heavy-duty, all-metal design shrugs off mud, ice, and daily punishment without the flex, rust, or cracked plastic that kills other steps.
Let's face it: most tube steps and boards are all show and no grit. Thin metal, hollow tubes, slippery rubber - and they look like junk after one winter. Gen-Y doesn't play that game. These are solid, powder-coated, all-metal boards that hold up to real use. No flex. No peeling chrome. No parts that fall off.
When you're hopping in after a long day at the job site or coming off the trail, traction matters. These Gen-Y boards have deep notches across the entire surface and an open design underneath - so mud, snow, and slush fall right through instead of caking up. It's grip where you need it and self-cleaning by design.
These aren't locked in place like most boards. You can tweak the height to match your needs - higher for a tucked-up look, lower for easier step-in. Plus, you get about an inch of side-to-side shift to fine-tune where your foot lands. Small changes, big comfort.
Don't waste your weekend under the truck. These boards bolt right to the existing studs with zero drilling. Once the brackets are loosely in place, test your position, snug everything down, and you're done. It fits clean, looks right, and works like it should.
With thick powder coat protection, these boards are made to outlast the cheap stuff. Gen-Y backs them with a limited lifetime warranty, so you can stomp, scrape, and step with confidence.

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Gen-Y line of running boards. Now Gen-Y has made a lot of different towing products and this is their first time really stepping into the running board line. And these are great. I really like the design of these. They're gonna be nice and open and really just give you the ability to hop in your vehicle a lot easier as well as your passengers and not be slipping in the meantime. Now today we have these installed on our F-150, but there's plenty of other fits available.
You just wanna make sure that you're using our fit guide on etrailer.com to make sure you're getting the proper running boards for your vehicle, especially because these are custom fit to use factory mounting spots with their brackets to attach this nice and secure. And it's also gonna cover, you know, here we have a crew cab. This way we can get both of our passengers in the back and the driver be able to get in here and it's gonna cover that whole section where they'd be stepping in. Now these are six inches wide on the platform, so it makes it nice and easy for you know, myself or even larger work boots to be able to step on here. And that's kind of the great part about this design is it's nice and open, whereas a lot of other running boards can actually hold onto moisture or ice or mud or whatever it may be.
These you could use as a boot scrape. So if you have super muddy boots from the work site, you can scrape those off and then it's all gonna drop down onto the ground. It's not gonna build up on the running board. Now you do have some adjustability, not only with height but also width to be able to adjust this out a little bit further. You can also move it front to back and height as well.
We have it in our middle height right now, so if you wanted this a little bit higher, you totally can, if you need a little bit more lower to the ground for people to hop in, totally up to you. So really you can kind of change the looks of how it's gonna interact with your truck. The great part though, it's raised up in this back section so as I put my foot in I can find a nice hold and be able to step in with no problem. Now as far as capacity goes, this is gonna be rated for 400 pounds, which is plenty for a 200 pound person like myself and another person to stand on here. Even as I'm on here it's bolted directly to the bottom of the truck.
So super solid feeling, there's no give with this. And the running boards aren't exactly light, these are steel so they're gonna be heavy duty, but they also have a nice black powder coat finish along the entire thing as well as the brackets. So if you've ever dealt with any Gen-Y products, their powder coat is rather thick in the best way possible, especially if there's something that's gonna see a lot of road grime and anything you drive in, this is gonna hold up long term and not rust or corrode. Now a lot of times I see people adding running boards on, it's either because they're getting older and it's harder and harder to get into vehicles that have high ground clearance. It's great that a lot of factory vehicles have that ground clearance, but you know, trucks now with crew cabs, these are family vehicles, people are daily driving these, taking the family with them and I have two little kids myself. So for them to kind of have to run and jump up in the truck is tricky. But to give them nice sure step, you know, especially with the grooves that they have on here, this is very aggressive. I mean I really don't see anyone slipping off this and that's what you want. You want a nice sure platform to step onto and you don't have to worry about slipping in the process whether you're getting in or out. Now if you have factory running boards on your vehicle already, not to worry, you can add these and you know, factory running boards are fine, but if you really want to give it a little bit of a more aggressive hardcore look, the Gen-Ys do a great job, but there's a few things with the factory running boards I'm not a huge fan of. So these are about the same width, maybe a little bit more narrow, but you can see how far in my hand goes, which when you open the door to hop in, it's not that bad. But if you want to be able to lower these down for, you know, shorter individuals or people with those mobility issues, you really don't have that option. A case that I see these really coming into play is if you're into aftermarket and modifying your truck and you've put a lift or bigger tires that raises this up, I've had plenty of buddies with lifted trucks and you have to kind of get a running start to hop in. And so for me being kind of an average height male, it's not that big of a deal. But for shorter people, and again, mobility problems, my parents are in their seventies, they're not wanting to have to hoof up in there. So being able to have that adjustability to lower those down, even with that lift on the truck, is gonna make it easier for you and all your passengers to get in. Another thing too is with this, it's just plastic. I mean you have a little bit of texture here along the raised sections, but any water, moisture, mud will get caked in this area. And while it will probably trickle out, I like the design of the Gen-Y that it's all open. So anything that I step on is gonna be dropping down and even just running my feet, it's pretty wet out here today. There's not a whole lot of traction here. So if you catch the wrong side and you slip off, that makes for a pretty bad morning to start your day. And again, not having any adjustability here means that you're kind of stuck with this from the factory, whereas the Gen-Y, you can really custom cater it exactly how you want it. Installation of the running boards is also really easy to do. You can do this in your driveway or garage in about an hour and it uses on our case, factory studs, to where we could just bolt up our new brackets and everything just kind of comes together pretty quickly so you're not having to customize or you know, do any drilling to get these installed. So that makes it nice and easy, especially for something that you're gonna immediately know the difference every time you hop in your truck and hop out. So definitely a great addition to really any truck or SUV you may have that you're looking to add some, a little bit more mobility to, but also a really cool look in the process. Some of the other running boards out there, a little bit bulky, not exactly the coolest looking things out here, which this one I think looks great. So again, that's why it's important to use our fit guide to get the specific fit to your truck or vehicle and that way those custom brackets are gonna go directly with your truck and it's gonna make installation a breeze. And that was a look at the line of Gen-Y running boards.
easy to install wish all were like this product
nice steps but might help some people if steps had installation instructions
I like the step itself, the board is great, very sure footing. The brackets that hold the board are the worst!!! Total crap and because of this, they are driving me nuts. Imagine driving down the road and someone constantly poking you in the ear. It sounds exactly like a springy door stoper when you bend it over and let it go. Dong! every time you hit a bump so in the county...often.
This is so bad, Gen Y needs to retrofit this and send existing customers new brackets or shims. Before anyone asks if they are installed correctly, like the other commenter, I had to call etrailer for a PDF on Gen Y's site, I get it, who needs the paper, but at least put a QR code to your docs.
This should have been an easy perfect 5 stars and I'm being generous because I'm pissed every time I hit a bump. The short answer is the bracket surface is flat and the truck body is not, they are tight as shit, and still rock on the surface. Fix it and I'll happily give 5 stars!
Installed in about 1 hrs with taking my time. Yes the instructions can be difficult to understand, since the instructions say curb side and roadside instead of driver and passenger side. The front is to the right on the page for the ram 3500 looking at the passenger side on the page. Pay attention to the frame bracket direction as you place it inside the frame. The front bracket has the nut to the front, the middle has the nut to the front and the aft bracket nut is to the rear of the truck. Used a level on the middle of each bracket to get everything aligned. Be careful when you tighten the bolts that hold the running boards down, slipped and got my hand one good time. Solid step, wife now enjoys getting and out the truck now.
